What is an
AI friend?
An AI friend is a conversational app you talk to the way you would text a friend — about your day, a small worry, a plan, a joke. The character is written. The replies are generated. Nobody is reading on the other side.
Platonic by design, not by accident
App stores file very different products under the same words. Some are written as romantic partners. Some are built for roleplay. Some are general assistants with a friendlier voice. An AI friend app sits in a narrower place: ordinary conversation, no romance, no clinical role.
Naina is written as a platonic AI friend. She is not a girlfriend app, not a dating product, and not a therapist. That is a product decision baked into how she is instructed to reply, not a filter you switch on later.
What an AI friend is good for
- Thinking out loud. Saying something messy and getting a reply that keeps the thread going.
- Low-stakes company. The commute, the late evening, the gap between things.
- Continuity. Reopening a conversation instead of re-explaining yourself.
- Practice. Finding words in Hindi, English or Hinglish without being judged for the mix.
What it cannot do
An AI friend does not know your life. It knows what you have typed and what the app has stored. It can be confidently wrong, forget a detail, or miss the tone of a hard day. It cannot show up, call someone for you, or carry responsibility.
It is also not a crisis service. If you are in danger or thinking about harming yourself, contact a local emergency number or a qualified professional. An AI reply is not care.
AI friend, AI companion, chatbot — do the words matter?
They overlap. “Chatbot” usually suggests a narrow, scripted helper. “AI companion” suggests an ongoing relationship with a character. “AI friend” adds the part that matters most here: platonic. If a listing promises love, exclusivity or a partner who “only understands you,” that is a different product with different risks.
Questions worth asking before you pay
- Is it obvious, inside the app, that you are talking to software?
- Where are conversations and voice recordings processed, and how long are they kept?
- How do you report a reply that felt unsafe or wrong?
- What exactly renews, at what price, and how do you cancel it?
- Can you turn off messages the app sends you first?
