Voice notes,
not a phone call.
“Voice chat with AI” gets used for two very different things: a live call you speak into and hear answered in real time, and a recorded voice note you send and then play back. The difference changes what the app needs from your phone, and what it can promise.
Recorded notes versus live calls
A voice note is a small audio file. You hold a button, speak, release, send. The app transcribes it, generates a reply, and — if the reply is spoken — synthesises audio you can play. There is a pause between those steps, the same pause you get texting a friend who is mid-something.
A live call holds an open audio stream in both directions and has to answer inside a few hundred milliseconds. It costs more to run, fails harder on a weak network, and is a different feature entirely. Naina sends and receives recorded voice notes. She does not place live voice or video calls, and nothing on this site should be read as promising one.
What microphone permission is for
Recording needs microphone access, granted by you, at the moment you first record. It is not an always-listening feature: audio is captured while you hold the record control, and nothing is sent until you send it. If you never record, the permission is never needed.
Where the audio goes
A recorded note has to leave the phone to be understood: speech-to-text, a generated reply, and text-to-speech for a spoken answer all run on servers, often through specialist providers. That means the honest questions are: what is stored, for how long, who processes it, and how you delete it. Naina’s privacy policy is where those answers belong — read it before you record anything you would not want kept.
What to expect from generated voice
- Pronunciation varies. Code-mixed Hinglish is the hardest case; names and English words inside Hindi sentences can land oddly.
- Transcription makes mistakes. Background noise, speed and accent all matter. Re-reading the transcript is worth it.
- Latency depends on your network. A reply is not instant, and a dropped upload means re-recording.
- A voice is a character, not a person. A warm voice does not mean anyone heard you.
When a voice note is the better choice
When typing is slower than talking. When tone carries the meaning — tired, excited, joking. When your hands are busy. Text is better when you want to be precise, when you are somewhere quiet, or when you would rather have a record you can skim.
How it works with Naina
Send a voice note and she replies; ask for a spoken reply and you get audio back. Photos work the same way — share one and she responds to what is in it. The waveform and conversation samples on this site are illustrative. The Android app is coming soon.
