Chatting in Hindi,
English or Hinglish.

Most people in India do not pick one language per message. “kal interview hai, thoda nervous hoon” is one sentence, two languages, no translation step. An AI chat app is only comfortable to use if it can read and answer that way.

What Hinglish actually is

Hinglish is code-mixing: Hindi and English inside the same sentence, usually written in Roman letters rather than Devanagari. It is not broken Hindi and it is not translated English. Word order, verb endings and filler words come from Hindi; nouns, technical words and brand names often arrive in English.

Two people can also write the same Hindi word very differently — kyun / kyu / kyon, nahi / nhi / nahin. Humans read past that instantly. Software has to be built for it.

Why it is harder for AI apps than it looks

  • Spelling is not standardised. Romanised Hindi has no single correct form, so the same question arrives in many shapes.
  • Script switching. A reply in Devanagari to a message typed in Roman letters feels like being corrected.
  • Register. tum, aap and tu are not interchangeable; getting it wrong changes the whole relationship.
  • Voice. Speech recognition and generated speech are usually tuned per language, so code-mixed audio is the hardest case of all.

What to expect from a Hinglish chat app

Expect a reply that keeps your mix and your script. Expect to be able to say “Hindi mein bolo” or “English please” and have it stick for the conversation. Do not expect perfect idiom, perfect spelling or flawless pronunciation in generated voice notes — quality varies by sentence, and by language within a sentence.

How Naina handles it

Naina’s conversation instructions default to simple Roman Hinglish — Hindi written in English letters, with the everyday English words people actually use. She follows your lead: write in English and she stays in English; write in Devanagari or ask for it and she can switch. Short messages, natural pauses, no walls of text.

The conversations shown on this site are illustrative examples of that style, not recordings of a live session, and not a guarantee of language quality in every exchange. Native-speaker review of Hindi and Hinglish output is an ongoing part of the work.

A worked example

You: “kal interview hai, thoda nervous hoon.” A useful reply stays in the same register and picks up the specific thing — the interview, tomorrow — rather than answering with a translated paragraph of advice. The day after, a conversation with saved context can ask how it went. That continuity is what makes a code-mixed chat feel like a conversation instead of a lookup.
